My latest work, including weddings, portraits, and event photography.

Hey there! My name is Matt Brodie and I am a wedding photographer in Columbia, SC. My wedding photography is all about strong portraits, real moments and amazing details. Give me a call today and we can talk about why I should be your wedding photographer.

In the mean time this blog is for both my personal and professional photography, and features images from recent weddings, travel and other photography that I'm up to. It's basically like my own personal photo album combined with an information source for my current and potential clients. My blog is less formal and much more fun than some of my other online works. I just want to give everyone a sense of who I am. Thanks for visiting.

South Africa

Well I'm sure it's no surprise, but while I was in South Africa I took a ton of amazing pictures. I realize that I'm blogging my adventure in a random order, but hey, it's my blog and I can do what I want. The order should be Zimbabwe, Africa Wedding, South Africa, but to be honest I haven't gotten through all the pictures from Zimbabwe yet, because I was so focused on these pictures from Simon's town (Capetown) South Africa.

The images below were all taken at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town, which is just outside of Cape Town South Africa. We stayed there for 3 days and had a great time. There is a colony of Penguins that lives on the beach and between them, the rocks, mountains, and sunset, it was next to impossible to take a bad picture.

African Wedding

I just returned home from two weeks in Africa. I went as part of a mission team to Zimbabwe. I'll post more on that soon, but while I was there, I had the chance to attend a wedding and take some pictures. The wedding was in Mutare, Zimbabwe in a little Methodist Church.

The Church had no lights, electricity, or air flow. It was designed to hold about 100 people, but almost 400 crammed in for this little wedding.

The couple was a really cute older couple that desided to get married after having lived together for a long long time. I think everyone in the community attended the wedding, because in a small rural town like this, there isn't much else to do. The wedding itself lasted almost 4 hours.

The church couldn't hold everyone. In fact at least another 100 people were outside the church. Many were very courious and watched through the open windows.

The reception was held down the road under an open tent in a field.

The main meal was sadza, which a corn based meal kind of like our grits only thicker

All in all it was a beautiful day (even if it was crazy hot). The couple even got blessed with a rainbow at the end of the day.

AFRICA!

Zimbabwe GirlMost of you who know me, probably know by now that I will be heading back to Africa this week. This will be my second time traveling to Zimbabwe. I'm will be going as part of a small mission team to help build a church and do a couple of other things here and there. Then we will travel to South Africa to work with a homeless girls shelter/school and have some tourist time. I'm very excited to go, not only because I get to be in mission with people, but because I will have several opportunities to use my photography as a gift for those we meet.

For starters I'll get to document the work we do on the church. That's a neat thing to be able to provide the congregation of this church with a record of its construction. I'm bringing a small portable 4x6 printer with me so that I can make prints straight from the camera and give them to people. I'll also use it to do free portrait sessions for families we meet. Understand that in the parts of Africa we will be going, most people haven't seen what they look like, let alone have a family picture. In many cases a family portrait I take and give them will be the only photographic evidence that some of these family ever exisited. Last time I went I took a polaroid camera and handed people the pictures. It only took about five minutes before families were coming from all over dress in their best clothing to get their picture made. I can't think of anything better to do while I'm there.

A good friend of mine who lives in Zimbabwe will be helping to guide our team around. He is a minister in the Zimbabwe United Methodist Conference and has offered to take us to a wedding while we are there. Being the wedding photographer that I am, I couldn't say no. I also volunteered to give my talents to the newly weds by photographing their wedding and providing them with prints while we are there. It doesn't seem like much to us in the States, but to people who can't afford bread, having a wedding photographer come and provide prints is unheard of. God is working in this trip and it seems that he wants my cameras working too. Again, I couldn't be more excited to do this.

I'll also be taking school pictures for the girls school/shelter. We're bring over a bunch of nice little 4 x 6 frames so that they can have their picture and put it in a nice frame. That is going to be a very special gift. Most children there will never have their pictures taken, nor will they ever have a nice frame to put them in. There is a good chance that the picture and frame will be a treasured heirloom for many generations.

I'll be posting some images and thoughts from my trip here as internet access becomes available. Please keep us in our prayers.

Hope for the Children of Africa Choir

The other day I had the pleasure of documenting a concert by the Hope for Children of Africa Choir. This is an amazing group of kids. Many of them are orphans in Uganda, but you'd never know it by how much love they have. They sing and dance their hearts out when they perform. I had the chance to hang out with a few of them off stage and they are just as great. Their personalities are not just for show. They tour the United States spreading their ministry in hopes of helping all those other children in Africa that suffering from the effects of war, famine, and disease. You can learn more about them and there ministry by visiting there webpage.
